At the Bengaluru Tech Summit 2024, Wipro Chairman Rishad Premji advocated for work-life balance, contrasting with Narayana Murthy's 70-hour workweek stance. Premji emphasized individual responsibility in defining balance and praised hybrid work models, highlighting Wipro's efforts to support employee well-being through flexibility and training.

Wipro Chairman Rishad Premji emphasized the critical importance of work-life balance during a fireside chat at the Bengaluru Tech Summit 2024. Speaking against the backdrop of Infosys founder Narayana Murthy's recent advocacy for a 70-hour workweek, Premji underscored that individuals must define and enforce their own boundaries.

“Work-life is something you have to define for yourself; organizations won’t do it for you,” Premji said, pointing out the evolving nature of the concept. While it once revolved around strict office hours, it now extends to managing distractions like social media during work hours. Premji also praised the hybrid work model, highlighting how Wipro's two-day office week provides employees with flexibility.

He further elaborated on Wipro's commitment to fostering a supportive work culture. “We train managers to be sensitive, look for signs, and have open conversations about work-life balance,” he shared, emphasizing the company's approach to employee well-being.

Premji’s remarks come as the IT sector grapples with shifting paradigms of work. Companies like Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, and Wipro are transitioning back to in-office schedules post-pandemic, sparking discussions on employee flexibility and productivity.

In contrast, Murthy recently criticized India’s move to a five-day workweek, asserting that a six-day schedule was vital for economic progress. Premji’s stance on balance provides a counterpoint, reflecting the growing demand for adaptable and humane work environments.
