The suspension of Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital's license in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, following allegations of medical negligence in the case of a 22-year-old woman's death, has ignited a political controversy. The hospital, which operates under a Trust chaired by Sonia Gandhi, faces accusations of falling victim to political vendetta by the state's BJP government.

The 100-bed Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital, inaugurated by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1982 and operational since 1989 in Munshiganj, Amethi, now finds itself at the center of a storm.

The incident revolves around the death of a young woman who was admitted to the hospital on September 14 with complaints of stomach pain. Subsequently, she was referred to a private Lucknow hospital and tragically passed away on September 16. The family alleges medical negligence and an overdose of anesthesia at Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital, leading to the filing of an FIR on September 17.

District health authorities initiated a probe into the incident and established a three-member team, with an Additional Chief Medical Officer at the helm. On September 18, the hospital's license was suspended due to preliminary findings indicating medical negligence.

Hospital authorities intend to challenge the suspension in court, expressing willingness to cooperate with the inquiry while questioning the abrupt license suspension without affording them an opportunity to explain. Wing Commander (retd) Manoj Muttu, the administrator of Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Trust, voiced concerns over the decision's justification.

The controversy surrounding the hospital's license suspension highlights the broader political rift in Uttar Pradesh, with the Congress party alleging that the BJP government is targeting the hospital due to its association with Sonia Gandhi.
