Sharmistha Mukherjee criticizes the Congress party for not holding a CWC meeting after her father's death and backs the proposal for a memorial to honor Manmohan Singh. Meanwhile, the Union government has agreed to allocate space for the memorial.
Sharmistha Mukherjee, daughter of former President Pranab Mukherjee, has lashed out at the Congress party over its handling of memorial tributes. In a recent post, she criticized the party for failing to hold a Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting after her father’s death in 2020. She argued that the decision not to convene the meeting was unjustified, noting that a similar procedure was followed after the death of President KR Narayanan.
Sharmistha’s comments come amidst the ongoing debate over a memorial for former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who passed away on December 26, 2024. While slamming the Congress for its actions after her father’s death, she expressed support for the Congress’s push to establish a memorial for Singh. She also highlighted that Pranab Mukherjee had once supported awarding Singh the Bharat Ratna, a recognition Singh did not receive during his lifetime.
The Congress party, under President Mallikarjun Kharge, has called for a dedicated space for a memorial in honor of Singh, asserting that the government’s delay in providing a location was disrespectful. However, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has since confirmed that a space will be allocated for the memorial and communicated this decision to Singh's family and Congress leadership.
