Shiv Sena’s Arvind Sawant apologized for describing BJP’s Shaina NC as “imported maal,” sparking backlash and an FIR. Sanjay Raut defended Sawant, urging against overreaction. This incident draws attention to gender sensitivity and respectful discourse in politics.
Arvind Sawant, a prominent Shiv Sena (UBT) leader, recently apologized following widespread criticism over his controversial comment describing Shaina NC, a BJP leader, as “imported maal.” Sawant’s remark, widely perceived as offensive, sparked outrage across Maharashtra, leading to a complaint filed by Shaina at Nagpada Police Station. She accused Sawant and his party of objectifying women, and the incident led to an FIR being lodged against him for allegedly outraging the modesty of women.
In response to the criticism, Sawant clarified that his comments were misinterpreted and insisted he never intended to insult women. He expressed regret for any unintentional offense caused, emphasizing his respect for women irrespective of political affiliations. Sawant, however, argued that the backlash is part of a deliberate attempt to misrepresent him.
Sanjay Raut, another senior Shiv Sena (UBT) MP, defended Sawant, asserting that the remark was blown out of proportion and that it highlighted Shaina NC’s non-local status rather than an insult. Raut argued that it is not unusual for politicians to comment on candidates' origins when they enter new political regions, citing past instances involving high-profile leaders. He emphasized that the controversy surrounding Sawant’s statement is unnecessary and urged the public not to exaggerate the issue.
