In a shocking incident in the Philippines, a radio journalist was tragically shot dead during a live broadcast from his home-based studio. The victim, identified as 57-year-old Juan Jumalon, popularly known as DJ Johnny Walker, was the unfortunate target of this horrifying attack.

Jumalon was in the midst of a live stream on Facebook when an assailant entered his residence and abruptly fired shots at him. The suspect had reportedly requested permission to make an "important on-air announcement." Tragically, this was a pretext for a violent act.

The immediate response to this incident was swift. Jumalon's wife rushed him to the hospital, but medical professionals, upon his arrival, were forced to declare him deceased. Authorities indicated that they were unaware of any prior threats against his life, adding to the mystery surrounding this dreadful event.

In the wake of the shooting, the Calamba Police has called upon the Misamis Occidental Provincial Forensic Unit to carry out a ballistics test on the murder weapon. A comprehensive investigation is now underway, and a Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) is being formed to coordinate the efforts aimed at a prompt resolution of the case, as stated by Gen Ricardo Layug, the acting regional director of the Police Regional Office.

Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr has vehemently condemned this heinous act and has directed the police to conduct a thorough investigation to swiftly bring the perpetrators to justice. In his statement, he emphasized that attacks on journalists would not be tolerated in their democracy, and those who undermine the freedom of the press would face the full consequences of their actions.

The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) Executive Director Paul Gutierrez has also called for a special investigation group to probe Jumalon's killing. While the motive behind the attack remains uncertain, Gutierrez suggested that, for the time being, it is considered to be work-related.

The tragic incident was further marred by the deletion of the original live video of Jumalon's broadcast from Facebook. However, some vigilant individuals managed to screen-record the horrific shooting, which also captured the suspect grabbing Jumalon's gold necklace before hastily departing the crime scene.

This tragic event underscores the dire situation facing journalists in the Philippines. The National Union of Journalists in the Philippines noted that four journalists have been killed since President Ferdinand Marcos Jr assumed office in June 2022. The attack is especially reprehensible since it occurred within Jumalon's own home, which also served as his radio station.

Additionally, the Philippines is ranked eighth in the CPJ 2023 Global Impunity Index, highlighting the alarming trend of journalist killings going unpunished. Regrettably, Jumalon is the second radio commentator in Mindanao to be killed during a live broadcast, following a similar incident in 1985 when Charlie Aberilla was shot dead inside his radio booth in Iligan City.
