Indian sprinting sensation Hima Das has been provisionally suspended by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) for three whereabouts failures within a year.

One member of the Indian team said, "Yes, she has committed three whereabouts failures in one year, and so she has been provisionally suspended by the NADA."

Notably, if an athlete fails to report their whereabouts three times within 12 months, it is considered a violation of WADA's anti-doping guidelines. It is unknown whether Hima's failure to report her whereabouts was due to late paperwork or missed tests.

Hima Das, an athlete of legendary prowess, won silver in the 400 meters at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta. She also played a crucial role in Jakarta, winning women's 4x400m and mixed 4x400m relay teams, respectively.

Hima might be banned for as little as one year or as long as two years, depending on the seriousness of her infractions.

Hima has been dealing with a chronic back issue for many years. This year she has already missed out on important competitions like the Federation Cup in Ranchi and the National Inter-State Championship in Bhubaneswar, the latter of which served as the final selection event for the Asian Games, due to a hamstring injury she sustained just before a Grand Prix event in Bengaluru.

Hima Das's punishment follows other Indian athletes in similar situations. After receiving a provisional suspension for three whereabouts failures, Race Walker Bhawna Jat decided to withdraw from the World Athletics Championships. Seema Bisla, a bronze medalist at the Olympics and the Asian Championships in wrestling was given a one-year suspension for failing to disclose her whereabouts.

NADA had also issued a notice to wrestler Vinesh Phogat for the first time in a year that she failed to report her whereabouts.

Athletes competing at the national and international levels are reminded of the critical nature of adhering to anti-doping regulations and keeping accurate whereabouts information by Hima Das' suspension.
