The Supreme Court has modified bail conditions for journalist Siddique Kappan, allowing him to refrain from weekly police reporting in Uttar Pradesh. Kappan, arrested for alleged involvement in a conspiracy related to a gang-rape case, continues to deny all charges against him.
The Supreme Court of India has relaxed the bail conditions for journalist Siddique Kappan, allowing him to avoid mandatory weekly reporting at a local police station in Uttar Pradesh. This decision, made on Monday, modifies a previous bail order from September 9, 2022, under which Kappan was required to report to authorities every Monday as part of his bail terms.
Kappan was arrested in October 2020 while en route to Hathras to report on the tragic case of a Dalit woman who had been gang-raped and subsequently died from her injuries. He faced serious charges, including conspiracy to incite communal riots and terror funding under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). The Uttar Pradesh government claimed that Kappan misused journalism as a cover for activities associated with the now-banned Popular Front of India (PFI).
During the recent hearing, Kappan’s lawyer argued for the modification of the bail conditions, emphasizing that Kappan has been residing in Kerala and has no need to report in Uttar Pradesh. The UP government informed the court that it had no objections to the application since Kappan is currently in Kerala, where he should report instead.

Additionally, Kappan’s legal team sought the return of his passport, which was seized during his arrest. However, the UP government stated it did not possess the passport, as it had confiscated only materials deemed incriminating. The Supreme Court noted that the issue of the passport could be addressed separately.
Kappan, who maintains his innocence, contends that the accusations against him are unfounded and politically motivated.
