The Supreme Court will hear a plea for an independent investigation into allegations of adulterated ghee used in Tirupati Temple laddus. Former Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu’s claims have sparked political tensions, with the YSR Congress Party refuting the allegations. The court’s decision could have wider implications for both politics and faith.
The Supreme Court is set to hear a petition today regarding an independent investigation into allegations that ghee adulterated with animal fat was used in the famous Tirupati Temple laddus. This follows claims by former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, accusing the previous YSR Congress Party-led government of allowing the use of contaminated ghee in the preparation of the religious offering. The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), which manages the temple, has also reported receiving complaints from devotees about the declining quality of the laddus in recent years.
The hearing will be conducted by a bench of Justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan, who will decide if the investigation should be transferred to an independent body. The Supreme Court had previously asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to communicate the central government's position on the need for a central probe. The TTD's internal report cited the supply of poor-quality ghee that lacked its usual aroma and taste, further fueling concerns over possible adulteration.
Naidu's allegations have sparked a heated political debate in Andhra Pradesh, with the YSR Congress Party accusing him of using religious sentiments for political gain. The controversy has heightened tensions in the state, where political parties are divided over the authenticity of the claims.
