Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi's assertion that secularism is a "European concept" has sparked controversy, drawing criticism from the DMK and CPI. They emphasize the importance of secularism in India, highlighting constitutional protections for religious freedom and the need to separate religion from politics.
Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi ignited a political firestorm on September 23 by declaring that secularism is a "European concept" that has no place in India. Speaking at a convocation of the Hindu Dharma Vidya Peetham in Kanyakumari, Ravi criticized the interpretation of secularism in India, stating, “A lot of frauds have been committed to the people of this country... Secularism is not a Bhartiya concept.”
Ravi elaborated that the origins of secularism in Europe were rooted in historical conflicts between church and state, asserting that India’s connection to "Dharma" makes secularism unnecessary. His remarks drew sharp rebuke from the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party, with spokesperson TKS Elangovan emphasizing that secularism is vital for India’s diverse society. He pointed out that Article 25 of the Indian Constitution guarantees freedom of religion, underscoring that the governor's statements reflect a lack of understanding of constitutional principles.
Communist Party of India (CPI) leader D. Raja also condemned Ravi’s comments, stating that the governor should adhere to the Constitution, which defines India as a secular democratic republic. Raja referenced Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s views on the importance of separating religion from politics, emphasizing the need to avoid using religious sentiments for electoral gains.
