Tourist Sparks Outrage After Pouring Beer Into Elephant’s Trunk at Kenyan Sanctuary

A Spanish tourist sparked global outrage after a video showed him pouring beer into an elephant’s trunk at Kenya’s Ol Jogi Conservancy. The sanctuary condemned the act, calling it dangerous and unacceptable. The tourist also broke rules at another conservancy by feeding rhinos. Authorities are now investigating the incidents.

A disturbing video showing a Spanish tourist pouring beer into the trunk of a bull elephant at a Kenyan wildlife sanctuary has gone viral, prompting investigations and widespread condemnation online. The incident occurred at Ol Jogi Conservancy in Laikipia County and involved a well-known elephant named Bupa, who has lived at the sanctuary for years.

The now-deleted clip, initially shared on Instagram by the tourist using the handle @skydive_kenya, showed him sipping from a beer can before pouring the remaining contents into the elephant’s trunk. He captioned the post with, “Just a tusker with a tusked friend,” referencing the local beer brand Tusker.

Though the act occurred last year, it only came to public attention after the resurfaced video triggered outrage on social media. Ol Jogi Conservancy issued a strong statement on August 29, condemning the act as “unacceptable, dangerous, and completely against the establishment’s values.” The sanctuary clarified that the incident had been dealt with internally when it originally happened and reiterated its commitment to animal welfare.

“We don’t even allow people to go near the elephants,” a staff member told the BBC. The sanctuary emphasized that Bupa is under close care and that such interactions endanger both the animals and the humans involved.

In a separate incident, the same tourist was also seen feeding carrots to rhinos at Ol Pejeta Conservancy, another protected area. Officials there confirmed that he violated their rules, as guests are strictly prohibited from touching or feeding the animals.

Authorities have now launched investigations into the tourist’s behavior, with many online users calling for legal action and stricter enforcement of wildlife protection regulations.
