Ruth John Koyyala, a 29-year-old transgender woman
from Telangana, has achieved a significant milestone by qualifying for a
postgraduate degree in medicine, making her the first transgender person to do
so in India. Her journey was marked by unwavering determination and a
two-year-long legal struggle to secure her rights.
Ruth's remarkable achievement challenges societal norms and stereotypes associated with transgender individuals. She earned a seat in emergency medicine at ESI Hospital, Sanathnagar, after an arduous battle that involved submitting over 20 representations to various departments and ministers. The Telangana High Court's acknowledgment of her plea to reserve a seat for transgender individuals in NEET PG counseling was a turning point.
Ruth, who comes from a reserved caste and is now a
medical officer at Osmania General Hospital in Hyderabad, is a pioneer and an
inspiration.
Ruth refused to compromise on her gender identity in order to get acceptance to a prestigious postgraduate programme that had hitherto been reserved for women or minorities. Even though she applied under the transgender category, she was offered a seat as a female in the NEET PG programme in 2022 and turned it down.
Ruth was able to apply under the transgender
category after the Telangana High Court stepped in and made the necessary
accommodations in June 2023. Her goal in life is to become a gynecologist so
that she may help trans people in her community who are reluctant to seek
medical attention before, during, and after their transitions.
