Donald Trump has chosen Ohio Senator JD Vance to be his vice presidential running mate in the 2024 election, highlighting key Midwestern battlegrounds.

Vance, 39 emerged as a household name two years ago in his bestselling memoir "Hillbilly Elegy," which documents his blue-collar Ohio roots. His pick is a signal that Trump wants to rile up the white, working-class voters who were most important to his 2016 victory in places like Pennsylvania,Michigan and Wisconsin.

Trump acknowledged this importance when he delivered his choice of Vance for the post, saying that our student common ground is with "American workers and farmers"-working Americans in those crucial swing states. He also emphasized Vance's military record and Ivy League background, framing the campaign as a mix of populist appeal and elite credentials.

Vance had previously taken a critical view of Trump during the 2016 election, but became an outspoken booster since. He is closely aligned with Trump on paramount interest to GOP voters such as trade, immigration and forward policy - particularly harboring the same skepticism about continued U.S. support for Ukraine. Vance's pick could also set him up to take over the MAGA Republican movement long term. The youthful 39-year-old is a stark contrast to age-wise at the top of both major party tickets and could be well-positioned for another attempt in 2028 if Trump becomes president again.

Vance has just as quickly been slapped with the label of a "Trump clone on issues" from critics including President Biden. But incredibly, that might be just what Trump wants in a running mate as he doubles down on his Shakespearean character juvenile antics.

The choice of Vance reinforces Trump's commitment to his previous policy stances, including plans for broad tariffs, mass deportations of undocumented immigrants, and significant restructuring of the federal workforce. As the campaign progresses, all eyes will be on how this Trump-Vance ticket resonates with voters in crucial Midwest states.
