Vance, 39 emerged as a household name two years ago in his bestselling memoir "Hillbilly Elegy," which documents his blue-collar Ohio roots. His pick is a signal that Trump wants to rile up the white, working-class voters who were most important to his 2016 victory in places like Pennsylvania,Michigan and Wisconsin.

Trump acknowledged this importance when he delivered his choice of Vance for the post, saying that our student common ground is with "American workers and farmers"-working Americans in those crucial swing states.
