Five and a half months after Israel began its offensive on Gaza, on March 25, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) called for "an immediate ceasefire" and the release of all Hamas hostages. 90% of the enclave's population has been forced to evacuate their homes, 32,000 Palestinians have died, 74,000 have been injured, and nearly all of them are experiencing a severe food crisis as a result of this attack.

U.N. Security Council ask to stop the war for a Gaza ceasefire

The US has consistently opposed past UN resolutions calling for an early stop to the war in Gaza. But this time, the US abstained from voting, indicating a shift in the Obama administration's position on the war. The resolution was also supported by the other members of the UN Security Council, including Britain, who had previously resisted efforts to support a ceasefire. Consequently, Israel cancelled the plans of two of the closest aides to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the cabinet, who was scheduled to travel to Washington, DC. Another complaint made by Israel, supported by Russia and China, was that the resolution did not require the release of prisoners in order to establish a ceasefire. On the contrary, beneath the surface of rage and aggressive activity, Israel's weakness is hidden.

In recent weeks, Israeli commanders have issued several warnings that an impending strike is imminent on Rafah, a town in the southernmost area of the territory that is home to approximately 1.4 million Palestinians. It would be extremely reckless of Israel to attack Rafah when fourteen members of the UN Security Council have called for an immediate cessation of hostilities.

At least 1,200 Israelis were murdered in a cross-border attack by Hamas on October 7, which sparked the most recent conflict. People from all around the world expressed their compassion and support for Israel on that day. However, Israel punished every Gazan for what Hamas had done in the months that followed, which infuriated people all throughout the world. In compliance with a resolution from the UN Security Council, Israel need to declare an immediate ceasefire after weighing its options logically.

Given that there was a serious breach of security and intelligence on October 7, Mr. Netanyahu ought to bear full responsibility for the incident. He had the option to act morally, but instead he threw himself into the conflict with no defined goals. Israel has destroyed most of Gaza after months of fighting, but it has not been able to destroy Hamas or free the hostages. The protracted dispute has caused multiple rifts to appear within Netanyahu's cabinet. The prime minister's coalition partners are sharply split in addition to being universally disliked.

Israel's relationship with its closest allies, particularly the US, is becoming more strained as a result of the crisis, which has further isolated the country. Continuing the battle will only exacerbate Israel's issues both domestically and internationally; it will also make it more difficult for Israel to achieve its objectives and kill more Palestinians in Gaza, which is already defenceless, under blockade, and has been bombed to ruins. Mr. Netanyahu is faced with two options. He has the option to take the UN Security Council's message seriously, put an end to the fighting, permit humanitarian relief to reach Gaza right once, and carry on with talks with Hamas via third-party mediators in order to free all hostages and remove his forces from the territory. Another option is for him to maintain secret rule over his nation despite its constant state of conflict.
