UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer endorsed India’s bid for a permanent United Nations Security Council seat during the 79th UN General Assembly, following support from French President Emmanuel Macron. Starmer emphasized the need for a more inclusive and action-oriented Security Council that reflects today’s geopolitical realities, pushing for broader UNSC reforms.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced support for India's permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), aligning with recent backing from French President Emmanuel Macron. Speaking at the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, Starmer emphasized the need for a more representative Security Council that is proactive and not hindered by political gridlock.
Starmer stated, “The Security Council must evolve to become a more inclusive body, capable of action.” He also advocated for permanent representation for Africa, and the inclusion of countries like Brazil, Japan, Germany, and India, along with expanding elected member seats.
India has been at the forefront of pushing for UNSC reforms, arguing that the existing structure, established in 1945, does not reflect the current global power dynamics. With its recent non-permanent seat term ending in 2022, India continues to press for a permanent position, citing the need for the Council to adapt to the realities of the 21st century.
