Uttarakhand Rains: Multiple Fatalities

Heavy rains and landslides in Uttarakhand have led to multiple fatalities and property damage in various areas of the state. Nine people lost their lives within a span of 24 hours due to the adverse weather conditions. The Gaurikund landslide alone accounted for two casualties. Panic spread across New Tehri villages as the Tehri Lake's water level reached 816 meters, raising concerns of floods and landslides in the region.

Several homes in the Khara Spring neighbourhood of Rishikesh were swept away by water after heavy rains. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) helped evacuate about 50 individuals from their flooded homes to higher ground on rafts.

A tragic event occurred when a car carrying four teenagers crashed in the Pauri region owing to wet roads. Three people were killed instantly, and the search is still on for the fourth.

Walls collapsing and flooding were blamed for additional fatalities. A wall collapsed, killing an elderly man in the Laxman Jhula neighbourhood of Rishikesh, while a child of 12 years old in the Dehradun district drowned when water seeped into her home.

SDRF has been actively involved in rescuing people from various incidents since June 1, with a total of 1,226 individuals saved so far.

Another issue that has plagued Joshimath town is land submergence; a 500-meter landslide occurred just below the Selang in Marwari Helang bypass. Even though Selang is not directly threatened by this landslip, it is nonetheless something to worry about.

In light of these difficulties, the government has urged residents in the Sunil ward of Joshimath to relocate to temporary shelters on higher ground because their homes are at risk of being flooded.

The state is dealing with the consequences of continuous rains, which have caused landslides and floods across the state, threatening human lives and damaging infrastructure.
