Uttarakhand will implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) on January 27, becoming the first state in India to do so. The UCC aims to unify laws governing marriage, inheritance, and divorce, ensuring equal rights, especially for women. Chief Minister Dhami assured that the law is not intended to target any community.
Uttarakhand is set to become the first state in independent India to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) on January 27, 2025. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s secretary, Shailesh Bagoli, confirmed the announcement, adding that the UCC portal will be launched at 12:30 pm on the same day at the state Secretariat.
The UCC aims to establish a uniform set of laws across different faiths and tribes, covering key areas such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and maintenance. While it is part of the Constitution's non-justiciable directive principles, the UCC has garnered significant attention as it seeks to replace existing customary laws.
The BJP, in its 2022 assembly election manifesto, promised the implementation of the UCC in Uttarakhand, which helped the party secure a second consecutive term in office.
Speaking on the eve of the UCC’s rollout, Chief Minister Dhami emphasized that the law was not designed to target any particular community. He reassured that the initiative would provide greater protection and rights, especially for women, who make up half of the state's population. The law, according to Dhami, is aimed at promoting equality for all.

Further, Dhami addressed concerns about illegal immigrants, confirming that action would be taken against those entering the state from Myanmar and Bangladesh. He clarified that no community would be discriminated against and that the state continues to focus on fostering harmony and unity among its people.
