Farmers blocked the Delhi-Amritsar National Highway in Kurukshetra on Tuesday

On Tuesday, farmers in Kurukshetra, Haryana, staged a protest by blocking the Delhi-Amritsar National Highway. The demonstration was in response to the Haryana government's decision to not purchase sunflower seeds at the minimum support price (MSP). The farmers claimed that they were compelled to sell their produce to private buyers at a significantly lower rate of around Rs 4,000 per quintal, while the MSP stood at Rs 6,400 per quintal. They demanded that the government procure sunflower seeds at the MSP.

As their demands went unanswered, the protesters resorted to blocking the highway. In an attempt to clear the road, the police employed water cannons and lathi-charged the agitating farmers. The farmers, in turn, expressed their discontentment with the state government and raised slogans against it.

The agitation quickly spread to other cities in Haryana, including Sonipat, Gohana, and Rohtak, where farmers blocked roads and highways. In Sonipat, they obstructed the Ganaur Pugthala Road near Sardhana village. Upon receiving information about the roadblock, the Ganaur Police intervened and urged the farmers to lift the blockade.

Virendra Pahal, a prominent farmer leader, stated that they would persist with their protest until justice was served, specifically addressing the police's alleged mistreatment of farmers during the lathi-charge in Kurukshetra.

In Gohana, the farmers blocked the Rohtak-Panipat National Highway, denouncing the lathi-charge on their fellow protesters in Kurukshetra. Members of the Bharatiya Kisan organization expressed their disapproval of the incident and labeled Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khatter as "anti-farmer." Additionally, the farmers obstructed the Rohtak to Hisar highway to voice their opposition to the treatment meted out to their counterparts in Kurukshetra.

The ongoing protests reflect the farmers' grievances against the Haryana government's failure to procure sunflower seeds at the MSP, leading to financial losses for the farmers. They are resolute in their demand for fair treatment and the fulfillment of their rightful demands.
