Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO), has issued a warning, urging global preparedness for a potential future pandemic that could surpass the severity of the ongoing Covid-19 crisis.

This cautionary message follows the recent declaration by the WHO that Covid-19 no longer holds the status of a global emergency, marking a symbolic milestone in the battle against the relentless pandemic, which has tragically claimed the lives of over 7 million people worldwide.

During his presentation to the 76th World Health Assembly, the governing body of the United Nations' agency, Tedros conveyed that while the global health emergency status of COVID-19 may be coming to an end, the threat it poses to global health persists.

He expressed concerns about the possibility of a new variant emerging, which could lead to a resurgence of disease and increased mortality. Additionally, he emphasized the ongoing risk of a new pathogen emerging that could be even more deadly.

Additionally, amidst the occurrence of multiple crises that intersect and merge, it is important to recognize that pandemics are not the sole peril we encounter. This emphasizes the crucial requirement for efficient worldwide frameworks that tackle and react to various emergencies.

He emphasized the importance of being fully prepared and taking decisive, unified, and fair action when the next pandemic emerges, as it is inevitable.

Tedros also highlighted that Covid-19 has had a major impact on the health-related goals outlined in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are set to be achieved by 2030. Additionally, the pandemic has hindered progress towards the Triple Billion targets, which were introduced during the World Health Assembly in 2017.

Previously, Tedros expressed that the trajectory of the pandemic had been declining for over a year, recognizing that the majority of nations had successfully reverted back to their pre-Covid-19 lifestyles.

He expressed deep concern regarding the detrimental impact of the pandemic on the international community, highlighting how it had severely disrupted businesses and pushed countless individuals into impoverished conditions.
