The draft plan for India’s military theatre commands is ready, aligning with PM Modi's 'Viksit Bharat' vision. Presented at the Joint Combined Commanders Conference, the plan aims to prepare India’s military for global conflicts, addressing concerns over China’s military presence along the LAC and instability in Bangladesh. The theatre commands are designed to break down operational silos and enhance the military’s global readiness.
At the Joint Combined Commanders Conference held in Lucknow on September 4, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan presented a plan for military theatre commands to India’s top military commanders, addressing questions and concerns about the impending changes. This development aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Viksit Bharat’—an India prepared to defend not just its borders but its global interests.
Since taking office in 2014, PM Modi has emphasized the need for integration and jointmanship among the armed forces. The theatre command structure is a part of this broader vision. India’s defence policy is evolving from merely protecting its borders to preparing for future conflicts that may require simultaneous operations across multiple dimensions, including space.
Despite initial resistance from the traditional military establishment, rooted in India’s colonial legacy, the draft plan for theatre commands is ready, awaiting political clearance. The theatre commands are designed to ensure India’s military is equipped to handle future conflicts that could arise both within the neighborhood and beyond.
At the conference, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh was briefed on China’s military posture along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) by Eastern Army Commander Lt. Gen. RC Tewari. With over 100,000 PLA soldiers stationed near the LAC following China’s 2020 aggression in Ladakh, the need for a unified command structure has become more urgent. Moreover, instability in Bangladesh and concerns over Islamist extremism further underscore the importance of a coordinated military strategy.

The theatre command system, with dedicated intelligence capabilities, aims to break down the silos that have historically hindered India’s military operations, making it a critical step in realizing Modi’s vision of a stronger, more global India.
