Yan Bingtao: Former Masters champion Yan Bingtao has been suspended due to a match-fixing investigation. The 20-year-old Chinese snooker player was one of five players from the world's top 50 ranked players to be suspended due to the investigation by the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA). Yan Bingtao: Former Champion Suspended By Snooker Amid Match-Fixing Investigation The investigation began in July 2019 and has seen numerous players face disciplinary action, including former world number 1 Mark Williams, who was fined £10,000 in November 2020. For Yan Bingtao, this is his first major controversy since winning his first Masters title in January 2020, where he defeated John Higgins with an impressive 10-8 victory.   The WPBSA hopes that the heavy punishments handed out will deter any attempts at match-fixing within snooker.   Yan, who is just 21 years old, won the Masters at Alexandra Palace in 2021. Still, his career could now be in jeopardy after he was suspended by the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA). He and other players have been accused of taking bribes to influence results or encouraging others to do so.   The WPBSA has said it will not comment further until the investigation is complete. However, this news has sent shockwaves through professional snooker circles just months after Yan's historic victory at the Masters.   The decision to suspend Yan is a heavy blow for both snooker fans and the player, who had been tipped as one of the game's rising stars following his remarkable victory at last year's Master's tournament. It is believed that Yan Bingtao was found to have breached certain rules regarding betting and game integrity, leading to his suspension from all competitive events until further notice.   The incident raises serious questions about why match-fixing continues to occur in snooker despite numerous attempts to clamp down on it.   The WPBSA revealed that multiple players are under investigation for potential breaches of their rules related to betting integrity. While none of these players have been named by the WPBSA, it is clear that Yan was one of them and he will remain suspended until further notice while the investigation takes place. The penalty for any player found guilty of match-fixing is severe, so this suspension serves as a warning to all professional players who might be tempted to breach this rule.   World Snooker quickly took action as soon as they received the results of his doping test and removed him from the match. Although it has yet to be revealed why Yan failed the test, World Snooker released a statement saying they would not tolerate any cheating or drug use during their competitions.   It is believed that World Snooker conducted all necessary due diligence before taking such drastic action against him. They felt it was best for everyone involved if he were removed from the match and further investigated why he failed the doping test.   At just 20 years old, Yan became the youngest Masters champion in 26 years when he beat Higgins 10-8 in a thrilling final earlier this year. Despite his achievements on the snooker table, Yan now faces an uncertain future after being handed a three-month suspension and fine for an unspecified "breach."   The suspension has caused huge controversy, with many fans calling for Yan to be allowed to appeal against the decision. They argue that it is unfair for such a young and talented player to be punished so harshly for what could have been a minor mistake. Read More It is understood that World Snooker has provisionally suspended Bingtao for breaching its anti-doping regulations as part of an ongoing investigation. While no details have yet been released about the nature of the violation, a positive test for a banned substance led to this decision.   The 2023 Masters tournament was set to be one of the biggest events on snooker's calendar and will now be without one of its headline acts.
