Following a collision with a cargo ship, a significant bridge in the American city of Baltimore collapsed into the Patapsco River.
At roughly 1:30 AM Eastern Time (05:30 GMT), the bridge collapsed, killing numerous people as well as cars.
Authorities report that two of the six missing people have been recovered from the water, and that a massive search and rescue effort has been launched to locate the remaining four. Authorities think that when the bridge collapsed, every single one of them was on a construction site patching potholes.

The ship is currently caught in debris from the recently collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge, which is three kilometers (1.6 miles) long. Just before the disaster, officials reported that it was experiencing a "power issue" and sent out a distress message, but it was traveling too quickly to change course.
Maryland Governor Wes Moore has declared that the bridge will be rebuilt "in a way that remembers the people this tragedy has impacted". According to Joe Biden, his administration will pay the "entire cost" of repairing the bridge and reopening the port. He ended by saying, "Our prayers are with everyone who was involved in this terrible accident and with all of the families that were affected, especially those who are waiting for the news of their loved one at present."
