The CBFC has agreed to certify Kangana Ranaut's film Emergency, pending cuts recommended by its revising committee. The film’s release was delayed due to objections from Sikh organizations and alleged political interference. The Bombay High Court has set the next hearing for September 30 to decide on the certification process.
The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has informed the Bombay High Court that it is prepared to issue a certificate for Kangana Ranaut's film Emergency, pending certain recommended cuts. The film, which depicts the 1975 Emergency imposed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, stars Ranaut as Indira Gandhi and was originally slated for release on September 6. However, its release was delayed due to a dispute over certification.
Kangana Ranaut, who also directed and co-produced the film, accused the CBFC of deliberately stalling the certification process. The delay was further complicated by objections from Sikh organizations, including the Shiromani Akali Dal, which claimed the film misrepresented their community and distorted historical facts.
The Bombay High Court recently criticized the CBFC for its delay in deciding on the certification, directing the board to make a decision by September 25. During a recent hearing, the CBFC’s counsel Abhinav Chandrachud confirmed that the revising committee had suggested some cuts, which, if made, would allow the certification process to proceed.

Zee Entertainment Enterprises, the film's co-producer, sought more time to consider the proposed cuts. The court has scheduled the next hearing for September 30. Previously, Zee Entertainment alleged that the certificate was being withheld due to political reasons, speculating that the upcoming Haryana elections might be influencing the process. However, the court questioned why the ruling party would oppose Ranaut, who is herself a BJP MP.
