A gas cylinder explosion at the Gita Press camp at Mahakumbh 2025 caused a massive fire, destroying huts and tents. Prompt action by response teams contained the blaze. CM Yogi Adityanath issued safety directives, while PM Modi inquired about the incident. Devotees continue rituals at the holy event.
A massive fire broke out at the Gita Press camp in Sector 19 of the Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj on Sunday, destroying 40 straw huts and six tents. The blaze, caused by a gas cylinder explosion in the camp’s kitchen, was brought under control by teams from the SDRF, NDRF, and fire department by 5 PM.
The fire started when a small cylinder leaked during tea preparation, triggering two larger explosions. Black smoke engulfed the area, with drone footage capturing the scene. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, present in the city for Mauni Amavasya preparations, visited the site and instructed authorities to enforce stricter fire safety measures.
A devotee, Jaspreet, fainted while fleeing and sustained a leg injury. He was given first aid at the Mahakumbh Mela hospital and later shifted to Swarupani Medical College, where he was declared out of danger.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with CM Adityanath to enquire about the incident. Following the fire, the Uttar Pradesh government issued a fire safety advisory for all camps, urging attendees to familiarise themselves with exit routes, keep fire-fighting equipment nearby, and avoid storing flammable materials in tents.
