The Sealdah Court in Kolkata is set to deliver the quantum of punishment for Sanjay Roy, convicted in the rape and murder of a duty doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Amid heavy security with 500 policemen deployed, Roy was escorted to the courtroom earlier today.

Roy, found guilty of sexually assaulting and strangling the 31-year-old doctor, has maintained his innocence, claiming he is being framed to shield others allegedly involved. During earlier hearings, he cited his religious beliefs as evidence of his non-involvement. However, Justice Anirban Das ruled that the evidence and witness testimonies established his guilt beyond reasonable doubt.

The victim’s parents expressed faith in the judiciary but criticised the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for failing to apprehend all suspects. “This cannot be the work of a single person,” said the victim’s mother, demanding stricter measures to prevent future crimes.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who previously advocated for the death penalty in this case, refrained from commenting on the impending judgement. "The decision lies with the judge," she remarked.

This case has drawn significant public attention, highlighting the need for stronger safety measures for medical professionals in the workplace. The sentencing announcement is expected to bring closure to the victim’s family while raising questions about systemic gaps in protecting women and ensuring swift justice.
