Former Kerala CM and Congress Veteran Oommen Chandy Passed Away

Oommen Chandy, former Chief Minister of Kerala and a veteran Congress leader passed away early Tuesday morning in Chinmaya Mission Hospital, Indira Nagar, Bengaluru at the age of 79.
The news was shared by his son Chandy Oommen on Facebook at 4:30 AM stating "Appa has passed away". The former CM had been suffering from an illness since 2019 and received treatment at Berlin's Charite Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram's NIMS Medicity, and Bengaluru's HealthCare Global Enterprises over the past year.
A special aircraft will transport his body to Thiruvananthapuram. It will then be taken to the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee office in the state capital and later to the Durbar Hall in the Secretariat for the public to offer their final respects.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed his condolences over Chandy's passing, stating that bidding him farewell is a very challenging task. He mentioned that they were elected to the Legislative Assembly in the same year and both emerged in politics during their student days. They shared a public life together, making it difficult to say goodbye. Pinarayi Vijayan praised Oommen Chandy as a capable administrator who was deeply connected to the lives of the people.

Political Career:
In the year 2022, he became the longest-serving member of the Kerala Assembly by representing his home constituency Puthupally, in the House for 18,728 days.
At the young age of 27, he won a seat in the Kerala Assembly and continued to secure victory in 11 consecutive elections. He also held the position of Kerala's Chief Minister for two terms, serving from 2004 to 2006 and from 2011 to 2016.
Chandy had also held the position of state minister on four occasions in different cabinets over the past decades and had served as the Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly four times as well.
