India cricketer David Johnson dies in a fall from a balcony of a club in London

Former Indian cricketer David Johnson, 52, tragically passed away after falling from the balcony of his Bengaluru apartment. The right-arm fast bowler had been battling health and financial issues since retirement.

It is sad news that the former Indian cricketer, David Johnson, died at the age of 52 from falling from his fourth-story flat in Bengaluru. Johnson was rushed to the nearest hospital and he was unfortunately, pronounced dead.

The right-arm fast bowler was recently known to be struggling with his health problems in the past one year mostly admitted to the hospital. He had been a hospital inpatient for the preceding week and was discharged from the hospital just 72 hours prior to the fatal mishap. Surviving Johnson is his wife.

“I was saddened to learn about the demise of my cricketing partner David Johnson. My heartfelt condolences to the family. He was also gone too soon,” an eminent cricketer and former captain of India, Anil Kumble twitted on X.  

Some of his friends who were close to Johnson claimed that he had been suffering from financial difficulties and the family has been forced to borrow. A benefit match was earlier planned to be conducted with an aim of collecting money for a house for the ex-player.

He represented India in Test cricket for the first time in 1996 in the B&H Trophy against Australia at Feroz Shah Kotla, Delhi. He only appeared in one more Test that year during the tour of South Africa and after that, his Test match career was over.

Despite displaying his skills for Karnataka in domestic cricket until the 2001/02 season, Johnson faced difficulty in securing employment after retirement. He briefly unretired twice time and started his cricket in the Karnataka Premier League in 2009 and 2015.

Johnson began coaching clinics in Bengaluru during his later years, but couldn’t continue that vocation as well on account of his problems. Thus, the untimely death has generated a lot of concern among the cricket fraternity over the loss of a promising future cricketer.
