Monsoon Session of the Indian Parliament Begins Today!: Know What to Expect

The monsoon session of the Indian parliament begins today that is, 20 July 2023 and will continue up to 11 August 2023. This striking feature of this session is that it will be the first ever session to be organized in the new Parliament building against the inauguration of which the opposition had raised several questions. Reportedly, the session will first begin in the old Parliament building and move to the new building during the latter days.

What are the Burning Issues?

21 new bills are to be discussed in the monsoon session in addition to 7 bills that were pending. There will be 17 sittings during the course of 23 days. It is being speculated that the Modi government will lead the introduction of a bill on the issue of Uniform Civil Code during this session itself based on the views gathered from the public by the law commission of India.

The prime opposition party, the Congress has also demanded discussion on two primary issues: The Manipur violence issue and the India China border issue coupled with imbalance of trade.

Hopes for Improvement?

During the last budget season the Lok Sabha had utilized only 33% of the stipulated time during the session while the Rajya Sabha had used only 24% of the scheduled time. This monsoon session, there are chances that the Indian parliament will be working with more efficiency since the General Elections of 2024 are knocking at the door.
