A tragic accident involving a Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus in Mumbai's Kurla West claimed six lives and injured 49 others late Monday night. The incident occurred on SG Barve Marg when the bus lost control, ramming into pedestrians and over 30 vehicles before colliding with a residential building's column, officials confirmed on Tuesday.

The bus, operating on route A322 from Kurla station to Sakinaka, accelerated uncontrollably, dragging and damaging vehicles along a 100-meter stretch before halting in Buddha Colony, a nearby residential society. Among the fatalities, three victims were declared dead on arrival at Bhabha Hospital, while others succumbed later.

BEST officials stated that preliminary findings indicate the driver, Sanjay More, lost control of the vehicle. He has been detained as investigations continue. The bus, a 12-meter-long electric vehicle leased from Olectra Greentech, is being examined to determine any mechanical faults.

The Mumbai Police have cordoned off SG Barve Marg, rerouting traffic to alleviate congestion. The closure affects several bus routes, including those serving the vital Bandra-Kurla Complex.
