Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday stated that the state government has no intention of conducting a "caste census."
He said this in response to a question from Samajwadi Party member Sangram Yadav,
“Census-related matters fall under the purview of the Union List of the Constitution of India,” the UP CM said.
He pointed out that the Census Act of 1948 and Census Rules of 1990 are established by the Government of India for census activities. The Chief Minister's statement came during a session of the state assembly.
The Samajwadi Party has been advocating for a "caste census" in Uttar Pradesh and had incorporated this demand in its manifesto for the upcoming 2022 assembly elections.
This issue is poised to become a prominent part of the party's agenda for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as well.
Party leader Akhilesh Yadav has introduced a new formula, PDA (Pichada, Dalit, Alpsankhyak), which emphasizes the concerns of the backward communities, Dalits, and minorities, particularly Muslims.
The decision by the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister not to pursue a "caste census" is likely to fuel political discussions and debates in the state. The Samajwadi Party's push for this type of census underlines its focus on addressing the socio-economic concerns of marginalized communities.
This announcement has the potential to influence the political landscape of both the upcoming assembly elections and the subsequent Lok Sabha elections. As the debate unfolds, parties will need to navigate the intricacies of addressing caste-based issues while keeping in mind the broader aspirations of the electorate.
