Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi paid heartfelt tributes to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on what would have been his 79th birthday.

Rajiv Gandhi, India's youngest prime minister, who served from 1984 to 1989, was commemorated by leaders from across the political spectrum on Sunday. He met a tragic end when he was assassinated by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) during a public event in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, in May 1991.

Leaders from different political spectrums, including PM Modi and Rahul Gandhi, commemorate Rajiv Gandhi's 79th birth anniversary, paying heartfelt tributes in different ways.

Prime Minister Modi took to social media to express his respects, posting on X (formerly known as Twitter), "On his birth anniversary, my tributes to former PM Shri Rajiv Gandhi Ji." This gesture showcased a rare moment of unity in the often polarized Indian political landscape.

Rahul Gandhi, the son of Rajiv Gandhi, paid a poignant tribute to his father at Pangong Tso lake in Ladakh. He laid floral wreaths at a framed photograph of the former prime minister. Rahul shared a cherished memory, stating that Rajiv Gandhi had once told him that Pangong Tso was "the most beautiful place on earth." This visit was part of his 'Bharat Jodo Yatra,' which he embarked upon by bike.

"I remember, when I was small, my father once returned from a visit to Pangong Tso and showed me some pictures of the lake. He told me that this is the most beautiful place on earth. During the 'Bharat Jodo Yatra,' I was scheduled to come to Ladakh but because of some logistical reasons, the visit had to be shelved. So I thought of a visit later and a longer stay here. I will also be visiting the Nubra Valley and Kargil," said Rahul Gandhi.
