The Indian National Congress party has a parliamentary seat in the state of Kerala and there are accounts that the sister to the Indian National Congress president Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has indicated her willingness to contest for the Wayanad parliamentary seat in the by-election. This is her first time to stand for an election though she has been very active in politics for the Congress party.

This by-election was necessitated following Rahul Gandhi who was elected in both Wayanad and Rae Bareli parliamentary constituencies recently opted to serve in only one of them as per the Indian laws that allows a member to hold only one seat. He said that he wished to express his emotions towards the people of Wayanad and the love, affection and support they showed him.

Priyanka Gandhi, 52, said there is no issue with the election and she will do her best and be a good MP for Wayanad. She will also be an MP in the Indian Parliament with her mother Sonia Gandhi and brother Rahul, thus, this political family is referred to as the Nehru –Gandhi family.

Priyanka is the elder of the two Gandhi siblings and has been the darling of the Congress party supporters for years; it was about time that people waited for her entry into the electoral politics. She has been demanding her family members since the late 1990s and got the congress general secretary post in the year 2019. Other leaders of the senior party have also referred to her as a political wizard and a charming lady whose presence and image would warm the people’s hearts.

The leading opposition BJP also opposed the move stating that it was a dynastic politics and Shehzad Poonawalla the BJP’s leader said that the Congress party was a family business. On the other side, Annie Raja, the member of the Communist Party of India who contested against Rahul Gandhi in Wayanad in the general election welcome the nomination of Priyanka, she said, “We need more and more women in parliament."
