Saudi Arabia Makes History by Sending its First Female Astronaut

Saudi Arabia has announced the names of two astronauts from the country who would be accompanying the team of the AX2 Mission to space scheduled during the second quarter of this year. One out of the two, is a female astronaut who is on the way to make history for Saudi Arabia. Rayyanah Barnawi would be Saudi Arabia’s first female astronaut to go to space. She would be joined by her peer, Ali AlQarni. Female Astronaut Rayyanah Barnawi: The Pride of Saudi Arabia While announcing the names of the 2 astronauts, the Space Commission of Saudi Arabia tweeted, “Every journey has its pioneers and every mission has its heroes.” The vision that Saudi Arabia sees is “empowering national capabilities in human spaceflight geared towards serving humanity and benefiting from the promising opportunities offered by the space industry.” Female Astronaut Female Astronaut The mission itself is a mark of the increasing interest of the Gulf Countries in space exploration with a view to providing equal and inclusive opportunities. Apart from the international front, the domestic aim of Saudi Arabia is to “increase the interest of graduates in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, and develop human capital by attracting talents and the necessary skills.” About the Mission The space mission involving female astronaut Rayyanah Barnawi would be a major development for Saudi Arabia in the field of space technology and space exploration. The two astronauts would visit the International Space Station. Another female astronaut, Mariam Fardous along with her male peer, Ali al-Gamdi will be undergoing training in order to assist the space mission.
