A Storm Brews in Rajya Sabha as Derek O'Brien's Suspension Looms Over Unruly Conduct


Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankar on Tuesday suspended TMC MP Derek O'Brien for the remainder of the current Parliament session for his unruly behaviour. 


The turmoil stems from O'Brien's fiery confrontation over the Manipur issue, igniting heated debates and partisan protests.

The day began with O'Brien employing Rule 267 to address the Manipur matter. However, the chairman challenged the relevance of the discussion, leading to O'Brien's naming and subsequent suspension motion moved by Union Minister Piyush Goyal. 


The TMC MPs' vociferous opposition and chaos prompted the Speaker to command O'Brien's immediate exit from the session.


Chairman Dhankhar, in response to mounting concerns, iterated the gravity of the situation. He acknowledged a missed opportunity to gauge the House's consensus in the heat of the moment. Reflecting on his decision, he made a conscious choice not to escalate the matter further, despite his authority.

Amidst the turmoil, O'Brien questioned the government's approach, asking, "What is stopping the heartless government from addressing the Manipur issue on this esteemed platform?" His critique extended to how opposition dynamics compelled Prime Minister Narendra Modi's presence in the Lok Sabha through a no-confidence motion.


In a tweet, O'Brien, the TMC's Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha, implored the Prime Minister to engage in the Upper House's deliberations, a move perceived as strategic in overcoming political impasses.
