Abhishek Banerjee of TMC breaks silence on Kolkata doctor rape-murder case, revealing 900 rapes occurred during 10 days of protests. He calls for a comprehensive anti-rape law with swift trials and severe punishments. Banerjee urges state governments to push the Union for decisive action against sexual violence.
Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee broke his silence on Thursday regarding the ongoing protests over the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. In a powerful statement on social media platform X, Banerjee highlighted the alarming frequency of rape cases across India and called for urgent legislative action.
Banerjee revealed that during the 10-day period of protests against the Kolkata incident, approximately 900 rapes occurred throughout India. He emphasized the shocking statistics: "90 RAPES REPORTED DAILY, 4 EVERY HOUR AND 1 EVERY 15 MINUTES," underscoring the critical need for immediate and decisive action.
The TMC leader urged state governments to push the Union government for a comprehensive anti-rape law. He advocated for stringent legislation mandating trials and convictions within 50 days, followed by severe punishments. Banerjee stressed that "anything less is merely symbolic and tragically ineffective."
His statement comes amid growing concerns about differences within the TMC ranks, as questions arise about Banerjee's recent absence from the party's day-to-day activities during the current political situation in Bengal.

The call for stronger anti-rape laws aligns with the nationwide outcry following the Kolkata doctor's case. As protests continue across the country, Banerjee's statement adds a new dimension to the discourse, shifting focus towards long-term legislative solutions to address the broader issue of sexual violence in India.
This development may signal a potential shift in the TMC's approach to the ongoing crisis, as the party faces pressure to respond effectively to public outrage and demands for justice.
