Tourist from Gujarat Arrested in Goa On Charges of Alleged Rape

A tourist from Gujarat in Goa stands was arrested on Friday for allegedly raping a woman, whom he had met during in a flight. 

The 47-year-old suspect, identified as Laxman Shiyar, was apprehended by Goa police after a complaint was filed by the victim. The harrowing ordeal unfolded at a resort in Assonora village, North Goa, on August 23.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Jivba Dalvi, the victim and the accused had initially crossed paths on a flight and struck up a conversation. During their interaction, the man managed to obtain the woman's phone number and subsequently maintained contact with her.

Earlier this week, both the victim and the accused separately journeyed to Goa. On that fateful day, August 23, Shiyar contacted the woman, persuading her to visit the resort where he was staying in Assonora. He used the ruse of showcasing the resort's amenities as a pretext.

Trusting the man she had met, the woman ventured to the resort alone. However, once inside Shiyar's room, the situation took a horrifying turn as he allegedly subjected her to sexual assault. Moreover, he threatened her with dire consequences if she dared to disclose the incident to anyone.

Prompted by the victim's courageous complaint, police promptly assembled teams to investigate the case. This thorough effort led to the arrest of the accused in Thivim village, situated near Mapusa town in North Goa.

The age of the victim has not been disclosed by the police to protect her identity.

Assonora village, where this terrible incident occurred, is situated approximately 40 kilometers from Panaji, the capital of Goa.
