India won the 2024 T20 World Cup, ending an 11-year ICC title drought, thanks to Suryakumar Yadav's spectacular catch to dismiss David Miller in the final over. The catch sealed a narrow 7-run victory against South Africa in a thrilling finale.
Lastly, the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 was won by India against South Africa in the final match for the first time in 11 years without any ICC title. The exciting final over was flipped on its head when Suryakumar Yadav made a stunning catch to dismiss David Miller.
When South Africa was needing 16 of the last over, Miller struck a massive six off Hardik Pandya. Yadav who was on the boundary line was very nervous when he was handling the ball when crossing the rope and caught the ball with his feet barely a millimeter away from the boundary. This single over turned the table completely in India’s favor and therefore gave a close victory of 7 runs.
After the catch, Yadav said, “Honestly, I do not know what was going through my mind I only saw the World Cup going away and I clung to it. ” Such presence of mind and excellent fielding skills made him receive the ‘Best Fielder’ medal from BCCI secretary Jay Shah.
India’s fielding coach was pleased with Yadav’s catch and said that such catches are practiced hundreds of times but to do it in the World Cup final requires great awareness and confidence.
This is the second T20 World Cup trophy for India; the first was won in 2007 under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni. The victory also cement India in the T20 format of the game and also ends over a decade wait for an ICC trophy.
