Sukhbir Singh Badal narrowly escaped an assassination attempt at the Golden Temple, thanks to Punjab Police officers Jasbir Singh and Hira Singh. The attacker, ex-militant Narain Singh Chaura, was subdued before causing harm. Badal lauded the officers’ bravery, while the incident raised concerns about security and potential conspiracies in Punjab.
Sukhbir Singh Badal, president of the Shiromani Akali Dal, expressed deep gratitude to two Punjab Police assistant sub-inspectors who saved his life during an assassination attempt at the Golden Temple on Wednesday. The attacker, ex-Khalistani militant Narain Singh Chaura, fired at Badal but missed, thanks to the quick action of ASIs Jasbir Singh and Hira Singh.
Badal met the officers on Thursday, embracing them and sharing their photos on X (formerly Twitter). He described them as part of his extended family, acknowledging their bravery and loyalty. In his post, Badal said, “Risking your life to save someone is extraordinary. My family and I will always be indebted to them.”
The incident occurred during Badal’s tankhah (religious penance) duty at the Golden Temple. Chaura, armed with a 9mm pistol, was swiftly subdued by the officers and other security personnel. Authorities stated that initial investigations indicate Chaura acted alone, motivated by personal grievances. However, police are probing whether a larger conspiracy might be involved.
The attack has sparked a political outcry, with opposition leaders criticizing security lapses. The Congress labeled the incident a result of negligence, while the BJP condemned it as a failure of law and order in Punjab. Meanwhile, police investigations are ongoing to uncover the source of the weapon and any potential accomplices.
